Christine’s Feminist Writings and Advocacy

Christine de Pizan is best known for her outspoken defense of women, a bold stance in an era when misogynistic ideas were widespread. Her writing career coincided with the "Querelle des Femmes" ("The Woman Question")—a heated debate during the late medieval period about women’s nature and status.

The Book of the City of Ladies (1405)

Perhaps her most famous work, The Book of the City of Ladies (Le Livre de la Cité des Dames), is a groundbreaking feminist text. In this allegorical work, Christine constructs a symbolic city inhabited by virtuous and capable women from history, mythology, and the Bible, effectively creating a counter-narrative to the negative stereotypes about women.

The book confronts and refutes common misogynistic myths, presenting women as wise, strong, and morally sound. It argues that women deserve respect and opportunity, challenging the dominant medieval belief that women were inherently inferior.

Written as a companion volume, The Treasure of the City of Ladies (Le Livre des Trois Vertus) serves as a practical guide for women on how to live virtuous, intelligent, and independent lives.
